Marian Goodman Gallery Paris has opened its fourth exhibition of work by renowned Chinese artist Yang Fudong. Titled “The Coloured Sky: New Women II,” the exhibition features a multi-screen video installation and two new series of photographs that embody the dream-like mystery of the artist’s visual language which he describes as “a feeling of yesterday but it’s actually tomorrow”The high-definition colour video installation “The Coloured Sky: New Women II” marks a departure from the artist’s signature 35mm black-and-white films. Touching on the vulnerability, mystery, and sexual power of nascent womanhood, the video shows five women in beachwear moving within a purposely artificial mirage-like waterfront – a colourful environment evoking childhood.Yang Fudong told ACMI Melbourne which commissioned the work: “I have made a lot of black-and-white films, but this time I chose digital video to make a coloured work. This was a very important experiment in understanding the ways that colour video can improve or change the narration. This project has given me the courage to explore new ideas and support other breakthroughs.”Showing alongside the photographs from “New Women II” is a series of black-and-white photographs titled “The Light That I Feel.” The series refers to an eponymous film shot during the summer 2014 on the island of Sandhornøy in Norway where the artist directed local actors and dancers. According to the Gallery, the artists “seeks to show how the wind and trees can express a narrative.”“The Coloured Sky: New Women II” was commissioned by Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne (ACMI) and the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. “Filmscapes” at ACMI, the artist’s first-ever career survey in Australia, will travel to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki and will be on view from September 19, 2015 to January 31st, 2016.Yang Fudong’s “The Coloured Sky: New Women II” is at Marian Goodman Gallery Paris until May 30, 2015.
