The State Russian Museum presents “Georg Christoph Grooth and the Time of Elizabeth Petrovna,” an exhibition which will be on view from December 2, 2016 through March 31, 2017.Georg Christoph Grooth is a German painter who studied under his father and other masters in Ludwigsburg and Dresden. The artist lived and worked in Prague from 1739 – 1740 and later on moved to the Russian Empire with his brother, settling in Reval (1741) and St Petersburg (1743), where he was appointed as a court painter to Empress Elizabeth Petrovna and was invited to supervise and restore the imperial painting collections. The exhibition in St. Michaels’ Castle will present more than 150 art pieces by various artists that were active during the time of Empress Elizabeth’s magnificent reign. The main part of the exhibition is the works by Georg Christoph Grooth whose 300th Anniversary is celebrated in 2016. Georg has become the founder of the Russian portrait school of the Modernity. He has influenced the formation of the leading Russian painters such as Alexei Antropov, Dmitry Levitsky, and Fyodor Rokotov. Among the 150 works on display are 40 paintings by Russian and foreign artists, over 50 graphic pieces and around 60 objects is applied art.The exhibition is on view at The State Russian Museum, St. Michael’s Castle, 2 Sadovaya Str., St. Petersburg.
