Video: Chen Qiulin’s “One Hundred Names” at 4A Sydney

“One Hundred Names” at the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Sydney is Chinese artist Chen Qiulin’s first Australian solo exhibition. Belonging to a generation of artists whose work articulates what 4a describe as the social repercussions of “China’s ever-constant push for political and economic reform,” Chen is best known for her works that explore the impact of urbanization in China.“Using a combination of photography, video installation, performance, and other mediums, Chen investigates the many contradictions inherent in contemporary life in a country where the tensions and conflicts between tradition, ritual and development are constantly tested,” explains Toby Chapman, curator of the exhibition.“One Hundred Names” spans the last ten years of Chen’s practice and includes key works such as “The Garden” 2007 and “Farewell Poem” 2007 as well as the new single-channel video work “City Manager” 2015. The centerpiece of the exhibition is “One Hundred Names for Kwong Wah Chong” 2015, the latest development of the artist’s “One Hundred Surnames in Tofu” 2004 – project.“One Hundred Names” is at the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Sydney until February 27, 2016
