Curated by the British academic consultant David Elliott, the work “creates a narrative of metal, wood, water, fire and earth, oscillating between history and identity, reality and imagination.”Jin Feng has taken the paradoxical foundation of historical writing as the point of departure for his work, “The Door,” which occupies the first floor of the gallery and is curated by curated by Chinese academic consultant Du Xiyun. Using antique Chinese door planks as his canvas, Feng has recreated a series of watercolours painted by English artist William Alexander (1767- 1816) during a trade mission to China in 1792.Occupying the second floor, Guan Ce’s project explores the conflicting issues of traditional Chinese culture and contemporary ideas. Titled “The Tao of Birds,” and curated by Gary Xu, the project “explores the overall contention with current Chinese culture and philosophy” and “presents the artist’s obsession with reading, thinking and contemplating.”Sponsored by the Tianrenheyi Art Centre, the first comprehensive art platform in Zhejiang to work with Chinese contemporary art exhibitions, research, publication, education, promotion and asset management, the exhibition is set to be one of the highlights of the 2015 China-UK Year of Cultural Exchange – the first of its kind.
