Sonia Dutton has always followed her own unconventional path in the art world. She has run a gallery in Austin, Texas — Champion Contemporary — while showing at fairs around the US and launching pop-up exhibition spaces in New York. This year, when the new Whitney Museum of Art was due to open on Gansevoort Street, she chanced into an uncommon opportunity: The use of a massive industrial space, operated by TF Cornerstone, directly across from the relaunched museum. The space currently hosts a two-person show of paintings by Dan Rushton and carved-wood works by Brian Sharrock, both up through July 31. On August 2, Dutton enters the next phase of her career with a more stable address: An eponymous gallery at 124 Forsyth Street on the Lower East Side, which will open with a three-person show featuring Daniel Noonan, Shara Hughes, and Jaqueline Cedar. We met with Dutton at her Gansevoort space to talk about the unique site and the process behind the work currently on view.
