White Cube, Hong Kong is hosting an exhibition “Strange Fruit” by Kenyan born, Britain-based painter Michael Armitage through March 11, 2017. Armitage produces paintings that connect with art history, often adapting the strategies and compositions of historical paintings to present the cultural and social politics of contemporary East Africa. Although the scenes depicted in his paintings are sometimes bucolic and vivid, this conscious aesthetic belies his committed exploration of pertinent narratives, in particular, the intersection of societal and sexual behavior against a backdrop of cultural conservatism. His paintings are from various sources such as news and social media, his own personal memories and drawings from life. He paints in oil on cloth made from Lubugo bark. He makes references to “Baikoko,” a dance in paintings showcased here. Some of his paintings here include: Nasema Nawe (2016), Necklacing (2016), Strange Fruit (2016), Muliro Gardens (baboons) (2016), Leopard Print Seducer (2016). The exhibition is on view at White Cube Hong Kong, 50 Connaught Road Central, Hong KongFor details, visit: www.whitecube.comClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek at the exhibition.
