Capitain Petzel presents a show by New York-based artist Pieter Schoolwerth (born 1970) entitled 'Model as Painting' through February 25, 2017 in Berlin. The artist considers all aspects of the artistic process to constitute an expanded definition of “painting.” First, he produces a drawing from photographs he took of a human model casting shadows. After being blown up, the drawing becomes a sort of template for building a multi-layered sculptural relief of the composition with foamcore. Then, Schoolwerth takes a picture of this three dimensional ‘model’ and reworks the photo with an image processing software that alters the images of the human body back into parts of the shapes of their cast shadows. The exhibition is on view at Capitain Petzel, Karl-Marx-Allee 45, 10178 Berlin, Germany.
