A leading figure in Italy’s Arte Povera movement in the 1960s and 1970s, Mario Merz’s paintings, sculptures, and installations aim to oppose a monolithic culture and to celebrate perplexity, moving away from the mass-media iconography popularized by Pop Art, the mythic emotionalism of Abstract Expressionism, and the machismo detachment of Minimalism.
