Ismail Manga – Le Ferier: Retrospective ‘The Baobab of the Sahel’ will be on view at Gallerie Leopold Sedar Sengor, Village Des Arts, Senegal through December 21, 2016.On entering the studio of Ismaila Manga at the Village Des Arts, you would come across a room wrapped in canvas. He used a kind of thick cotton cloth that he would not prime. Rather, he had a peculiar practice of priming them. He would draw onto them with charcoal and pencil and sometimes ink, fine drawings that held a captivating realism. Then they would go through a process of treatment that would shock most museum curators and conservationists. Outside his studio, he would leave them to rust under a pile of red earth and iron scrap for weeks. He would leave them to the very elements his people, the Jola, found so endearing. When he would then unearth them literally, they would have a distinct red stain that would transport a visual, very occidental in technique back into the Sahel. The exhibition is on view at Gallerie Leopold Sedar Sengor, Village Des Arts, Route de l’aeroport Yoff Dakar, Senegal. For details, visit: http://www.villagedesarts.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition.
