Macaya Gallery in Miami is hosting an exhibition “American Banned” that will be on view through November 11, 2016.The exhibition brings together artworks by three acclaimed contemporary artists- Chor Boogie, Stuart Sheldon and Ashley Reid. Chor Boogie is one of the prominent masters of the spray paint medium, presents original paintings and multi-media works; while Stuart Sheldon showcases a new series of artwork ‘I’m with the Banned’ comprising mixed media on canvas and paper, using an wide and unusual array of mediums like acrylic, vinyl, oil crayon, gunpowder, glass bottles, spray paint, found objects, shredded pay stubs, even his own blood to convey piercing political statements. Sheldon also presents an installation and limited edition video addressing violence in the society with first grade chairs, bullets and chain. Ashley Reid presents ‘White Powder’, which is an anarchistic photographic depiction of social and authoritative culture, presented in a perspective that is critical, loving, and transgressive in its kitschy approach, bringing questions over subjects of instant gratification, protest, police brutality, appropriation, empathy, and accountability through self-portraiture and her community. Standing at the crossroads of the concluding chapter of the first black presidency in United States, these works collectively provoke political irregularities, enthuses citizens to take part in the political process, and examines systemic violence, racism and oppression. The exhibition is on view at Macaya Gallery, Wynwood Arts District, 145 North West 36th Street, Miami, FL 33127.
