Mary Boone Gallery will host “Ai Weiwei 2016: Roots and Branches” at both its locations in New York from November 5 through December 23, 2016.The show features the recent works of Ai Weiwei, an eminent international artist and human rights activist. The works on exhibit incorporates a variety of mediums from ancient wood and porcelain, to modern LEGO bricks, and wallpaper of the Artist’s design. At the uptown gallery (745 Fifth Avenue), a circular field of 40,000 spouts broken from antique Chinese porcelain teapots fills the main room. This reflects Weiwei’s study of perspective through a series of photographs. This serves as a backdrop for this installation. The downtown gallery (541 West 24 Street), showcases the monumental (25 foot high) Tree. This has been constructed from weathered sections of dead trees that have been brought from the mountains of Southern China and fused together in the form of an entire, healthy tree with spreading branches. Apart from these, the show also includes new works created out of plastic LEGO toy bricks and artworks made of ancient reclaimed huali wood. The exhibition will be on view at Mary Boone Gallery, 745 Fifth Avenue and 541 West 24 Street, New York.
