Saffronart, India’s premier international auction house, is giving itself a bigger space in New Delhi. The 3,000 sq ft gallery at The Claridges in the leafy Lutyens’ Delhi will be inaugurated this evening (November 3) by eminent artist Krishen Khanna. The gallery’s first show — a solo of Khanna’s recent works — will also get underway this evening, featuring 24 new monochromatic works by the 91-year-old artist. Khanna, one of the last surviving modernists who spearheaded the growth and evolution of Indian idiom of modern art concurrently with India’s Independence, is part of the country’s art legends. A self-taught artist, he worked as a banker in Mumbai for 14 years in 1940s-1950s but his proclivities lay with the art as he hobnobbed with the city’s leading artists — he was a generous collector of the works of some of India’s budding modern artists in those decades. Eventually, he gave up banking and turned full-time artist. It’s befitting that the new gallery space opens with a show by an artist who has lived through the breadth of evolution of modern Indian art. Saffronart CEO Hugo Weihe says, “We are proud to inaugurate our versatile, state-of-the-art gallery space with an exhibition of works by Krishen Khanna. Our gallery’s location in the heart of the capital makes it easily accessible, allowing us to hold exhibitions, previews, talks and other art initiatives. Additionally, the gallery space will be used to collaborate with artists and a partner gallery in Delhi, extending Saffronart’s continued efforts to support the arts.”Krishen Khanna’s solo runs at Saffronart New Delhi, The Claridges, 12 Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Road, New Delhi - 110001, through November 13, 11am - 7pmClick on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Minion Pro'}
