C L E A R I N G, New York, is hosting artist Calvin Marcus's exhibition, titled 'Were Good Men', through October 30, 2016. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. The show features 39 new paintings by the artist. Each canvas is an enlargement of a crayon on kraft-paper study, created in rich green oil stick over sandy brown grounds. The grasses are made with various levels of density depicting nature in its simplest form. Among these are portraits of war-ravaged soldiers, rendered with exaggerated features comprising purple faces, blood-shot eyes, blue fingernails, and orange hands. These depict grotesque expressions of extreme pain and mockery.Through his paintings, Marcus explores the relationship between individual and collective identities. The exhibition is on view at C L E A R I N G, 396 Johnson Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 11206.
