Whitechapel Gallery, London, is hosting an exhibition titled 'Thick Time' by William Kentridge that will be on view through January 15, 2017.William Kentridge is one of South Africa’s most prominent artists, known for his drawings, films, lecture performances and opera and theatre productions. Inspired by philosophy, literature and early cinemas, he has created several serious works of art which explores time and relativity, history of colonialism and the aspects of revolutionary politics. 'Thick Time' brings together six of his works created between 2003 and 2016, featuring two of his immersive audio-visual installations - ‘The Refusal of Time’ and ‘O Sentimental’. Inspired from a series of conversations between the artist and American scientist Peter Galison around theories of time, ‘The Refusal of Time’ explores the transformation of time into material objects, sound, images and mechanics; ‘O Sentimental’ is created on the notion of Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky’s theory that people are ‘sentimental but programmable machines', featuring Trotsky’s speeches as subtitles to the video installation. The exhibition also features Kentridge’s flip-book film, ‘Second-hand Reading’, a series of mural-scale tapestries based on his opera production ‘The Nose’.The exhibition is on view at Whitechapel Gallery, 77-82 Whitechapel High Street, London E1 7QX, United Kingdom.
