The Modern Institute in Glasgow is hosting an exhibition 'Three Cats' by Nicolas Party that will be on view through October 29, 2016.The exhibition is the second solo exhibition of the Brussels-based artist, where the gallery space is transformed into an interior thronged with temporary walls and murals resembling marble and malachite in the manner of trompe l’oeil, creating a faux-classical setting that brings the artist’s new body of pastels on canvas work on display. Party applies marbelized effects on the gallery surface and the temporary walls- embellished structures functioning as revitalized ‘picture rails’ for the purpose of presenting the pastels. The techniques and modes refer to a decorative tradition that the artist continuously employs in his works. Often executing his paintings in materials conventionally used in murals such as charcoal, acrylic, spray paint, gold leaf and oil paint, Party examines the evolution in painting’s natural habitat and forms of presentation. Across the exhibition, his works explore the classical genres- portraiture, still lives and landscapes- themes that he ventures through repeatedly in his practice. The exhibition is on view at The Modern Institute, 3 Aird's Ln, Glasgow G1 5HU, United Kingdom.
