Brand New Gallery in Milan is hosting an exhibition “Blurred Lines” by Paul Anthony Smith that will be on view through November 12, 2016.The exhibition is New York based artist Paul Anthony Smith’s first European solo show, featuring a group of large scale painting from his recent body of works. In this series of work, Smith implemented the use of drawing, layering cinderblocks to create walls of blurred lines. He started with six large photographs from previous works and painted cinderblocks on them- with oil sticks, with colors corresponding to the photographs, turning a digital pixel into a handmade, expressive gesture. Then, using these prints as reference sketches, he recreated the cinderblock pattern in the same colors drawing on the canvases with painted underlayer of white, blue or bright yellow. With these paintings, Smith continues to explore the manipulation of images, camouflaging ideas and nostalgia: how images are broken into pixelated color blocks as a disguise to form walls. The exhibition is on view at Gallery 2 of Brand New Gallery, Via Carlo Farini, 32, 20159 Milano, Italy.
