Brand New Gallery in Milan is hosting an exhibition “Deborah Kass: Art Histories” that will be on view through November 12, 2016.The exhibition is the New York based artist Deborah Kass’s first solo show in Italy, comprising a group of works from the most interesting series of the artist’s career. In her ‘the Warhol Project’, she utilized Andy Warhol’s technical languages to represent iconic figures, and turned Warhol’s ambivalent relationship to popular culture by selecting subjects with her own personal and political interests. Her ‘My Elvis’ series addresses to gender and ethical identity by replacing Warhol’s Elvis with Barbra Streisand from 'Yentl‘': a film where Streisand camouflages as a man to receive an education in Talmudic Law. The series states Kass’s concerns about gender relations and promotes feminist advocacy in the society. In ‘The Jewish Jackie Series,’ she took influence from Warhol’s checkerboard like compositions and inserted repeated profile images of Barbra Streisand. Kass’s works look back on the 20th century critically and with great nostalgia. Taking cue from divergent realms of art history, popular culture, political realities, and her own philosophies, the artist continues to present the explorations that characterized her works since 1980s in these new hybrid textual and visual works. The exhibition is on view at the Gallery 1 of Brand New Gallery, Via Carlo Farini, 32, 20159 Milano, Italy.
