“Dodo Data Dada,” a new exhibition by New York-based artist Brian Dettmer, will run through October 8, 2016, at P.P.O.W, New York. This is Dettmer’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. The artist’s long-standing interest in the physical book and its dynamic status in our contemporary world is central to this exhibition.Among the works on view are “The American Statesman,” a series of sculptural works created from early 20th century political texts and several encyclopedic pieces in the section “Universal Ruins.” This section contains a full set of 25 volumes of the 1954 edition of The Universal Standard Encyclopedia. The exhibition explores the medium of the physical book that is on the verge of extinction. It looks at how information is communicated in today’s day and age and links it to Dettmer’s practice to the Dadaist’s social commentary on language, media, and technology through the use of found materials. The artist dissects and deconstructs the printed page and looks at how books have lost their authority in our digital age. Through his artwork he proposes a new way of understanding these texts. The exhibition is on view at P.P.O.W, 535 West 22nd Street, New York, NY 10011.
