The Landmark complex in Hong Kong is due to hold an ambitious exhibition that places works by artists including Renoir, Dalí and Yayoi Kusama over the heads of shoppers.Entitled Vision Tunnels, the exhibition encompasses 14 works, separated into what Landmark calls three “imaginative art journeys” through art history. These three strands are linked by a steel and glass arched tunnel, illuminated by hidden LEDs, that runs through the mall, which is designed by architect Rocco Yim.Speaking to ARTINFO, Yim described the tunnels as “tall vertical spatial volumes akin to traditional cathedral-like spaces that embrace both the art and the visitor, and help to draw one’s gaze upwards,” before adding that “they are designed to be different – with a visual purity, lightness, ephemerality, and mystique.”Taking four months to design and a month to build, the tunnels are formed in the shape of a “Y”, are suspended 2.5 meters above Landmark visitors’ heads, and are nearly 5 meters high. Together, they are roughly the size of a basketball court.Inspired by what Yim calls the “energy, mobility and movement” of Landmark Atrium, he hopes that this exhibition creates “a whole new way of looking at art. Instead of standing still, or sitting down, as you do in a conventional museum, you can appreciate art while you are on the move.” He continues, “the Tunnels greet visitors from different directions, and once you are captivated within their embrace, you are lured to look up, where a translucent backdrop filters the surroundings and art takes center stage.”The first thematic section of the Vision Tunnels will be "Heritage of the Masters", and will explore the legacy of Peter Paul Rubens from his own time through to the present. Beginning with a piece from Ruben’s own studio of artists, “Hercules and Omphale,” circa 1620s, it also features a portrait by Renoir of his son Pierre as a young child, and an abstract painting-cum-sculpture from French artist Eric Baudart titled “Concave - Cuivre” from 2015.This recent work is complimented by "Contemporary Voices," the next channel of the exhibition. A survey of international artists who make work responding to the modern world, they are all represented by local galleries and auction houses. This section features, among others, artworks by Yayoi Kusama, Angel Vergara and Huang Rui.The third element of “Vision Tunnels” compiles artists whose innovations and artistic rule-breaking inspired these contemporary artists. This group of works is labeled "Visionaries of Modern Art," and features work from Luis Chan, Chu Teh-Chun and Dalí.Arranged to meet at a central point, these three threads all meet at Yinka Shonibare’s large sculpture “Alien Woman on Flying Machine,” 2011, a glider-like piece in mid-flight above the heads of exhibition visitors and shoppers, The curators hope they will be inspired by the “Vision Tunnels” and “Be Inspired in Central.”“Be Inspired in Central” runs from March 21 through April 4 at Landmark Atrium
