Jon Chan seeks to bring beauty to the banal with his first solo exhibition, “Paraphernalia,” which is currently running at the Grey Projects gallery in Singapore.Working in oil, Chan takes inspiration from found images from common print and online media, the paraphernalia of the exhibition’s title. Taking these images out of their original contexts gives them strange and sometimes sinister second meanings so a stock image of a woman having what looks at first glance like a spa treatment turns out to be an altogether more macabre experience. Another painting, of a woman floating in a pool looking straight out of the canvas can equally be read as simply a young lady swimming or as something more violent.“Paraphernalia” is at Grey Projects until April, 2.
