“I am not interested in the kind of expression that you have when you paint a painting with brush strokes… I want to do something new,” Donald Judd once said. Judd is just one of the icons of the Minimalist and Conceptual art movements included in the selling exhibition “Between the Eyes” at Sotheby’s S|2 London until March 24, 2016.“Between the Eyes” charts the evolution of Minimalist and Conceptual art from the 1960s to the present day through the work of artists including John Baldessari, Alighiero Boetti, Dan Flavin, Wade Guyton, Damien Hirst, Donald Judd, Joseph Kosuth, Yayoi Kusama, Sol Lewitt, Robert Mangold, Francois Morellet, Bruce Nauman, Robert Ryman, Rudolf Stingel, and James Turrell.According to Sotheby’s, the works in “Between the Eyes” transform “immaterial concepts into physical objects” and explore “the relationship between the idea and the experience of seeing.” Developed in the US in the 1960s, the artists of these movements challenged perceptions of materials and space, creating works that referred only to themselves. In 1967, Sol Lewitt explained that “In conceptual art the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work.”“When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art,” he said.”“Between the Eyes” is a celebration and exploration of the infinite possibilities of the artistic arena of Minimalist and Conceptual art, as pioneered by visionaries such as Lewitt and Judd.S|2 is Sotheby’s Contemporary art gallery, offering year-round exhibition programming and bespoke private sales. With dedicated gallery space in New York, London and Hong Kong, S|2 presents selling exhibitions exploring the work of celebrated artists such as Banksy, Joseph Beuys, Keith Haring, and Yayoi Kusama, as well as shows curated by influential art world figures like Vito Schnabel.
