Monumental Marilyn Monroe Sculpture Debuts in Bendigo

American artist Seward Johnson’s monumental eight-metre-high “Forever Marilyn” sculpture has been installed in Rosalind Park Bendigo ahead of the opening of “Bendigo Art Gallery and Twentieth Century Fox present, Marilyn Monroe” at the Bendigo Art Gallery on March 5.Making its international debut in Bendigo, the world-famous 15-tonne stainless steel and aluminum artwork captures Monroe’s famous “flying skirt” pose from the 1955 Billy Wilder film “The Seven-Year Itch” and is based on the iconic photograph of the scene by Bernard of Hollywood.“Forever Marilyn” is part of Johnson’s “Icons Revisited” series which “asks provocative questions concerning our society's embrace of particular visual icons, and their impact and shift of message over time,” according to the artist’s website.“Bendigo Art Gallery and Twentieth Century Fox present, Marilyn Monroe” brings together authentic artefacts, clothing, and other objects belonging to Marilyn, including more than 20 original film costumes from some of Marilyn’s greatest films.Highlights include her iconic William Travilla gown from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, her address book, and her director’s chair, as well as studio portraits, wardrobe test photographs, lobby cards, and film posters from the 12 films she completed with Twentieth Century Fox.“Forever Marilyn” is on display in Bendigo until July.
