Galerie Mayoral has gone all-out in its celebration of the 60th anniversary of Joan Miró’s (1893-1983) Mallorca studio, even recreating the Spanish artist’s atelier in its London gallery. Founded in 1956, Miro’s Mallorca studio was designed by Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert, who was a close friend of the artist.Developed in collaboration with historian Joan Punyet Miró, the artist’s grandson, and curated by Elvira Cámara, Director of The Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Majorca, Mayoral’s exhibition evokes what it describes as “the poetic universe of the artist’s atelier,” which in the case of Miro’s Mallorca studio was crucial to the artist’s creative output.Joan Punyet Miró explains: “The Studio offered Miró a suitable working environment. When he closed the door behind him, he knew he was cutting all contact with the outside world and entering into his imaginary universe. This imaginary space, his reality, was arranged upon a background of Mediterranean light, colors and shapes…”Complete with furniture, drawing and painting materials, and household items, as well as 25 of Miro’s paintings and drawings, the recreation offers visitors an insight into the everyday working life of the avant-garde painter. A second exhibition space features archive imagery, personal effects of the artist, and letters of correspondence between Miro and Sert about the design of the workshop.Miró’s studio, Mayoral at 6 Duke Street, London, 21 January – 12 February 2016
