The Royal Academy of Arts has announced that it has elected Brian Catling as a Royal Academician in the category of sculpture. The London-born multi-media artist’s broad, category-defying practice spans sculpture, painting, performance, video making, and poetry.“I am obsessively engaged in the collision of separate activities that sometimes fuse together in a hybrid event - they being the writing of poetry, the constructing of sculptural installation and the action of performance. Most recently they have fetched up as video works,” he has said.Catling is currently a fellow of Linacre College, Oxford and Professor of Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, University of Oxford. He studied at the East London Polytechnic (BA), followed by the Royal Collage of Art (MA), and has been exhibiting internationally since 1975.The Royal Academy of Arts also announced the appointment of Chantal Joffe RA as a Professor of Painting and Cathie Pilkington RA as a Professor of Sculpture for the Royal Academy Schools, as well as the election of Roger Zogolovitch as an Honorary Surveyor.
