Yehudit Sasportas is an Israeli artist whose monochrome mixed-media installations mix influences, technology, personal experiences, and myths.“Vertical Swamp – Raw Material” at Eigen + Art in Berlin bears minimal resemblance to natural landscape. The work’s vertical character is emphasized through the use of black rectangles in various dimensions, represented in artworks themselves, as well as scattered around the exhibition room in the form of sculptures. There is an interplay of geometrical shapes and organic forms. Her compositions are like seismographs – recordings of the sounds from surrounding environment, transformed into abstract 3-dimensional compositions, with black marks cutting deeply into the surface of the artworks. The bonds of nature and technology are important for the artist. For her video installation “The Magnetic Shaky Table” (2015), she used materials found at a peat bog in Germany: rocks, dried pieces of wood and branches. Sasportas magnetized these objects and caused them to move constantly, using a magnetic field. The movements are erratic and yet grounded in the ebb and flow of nature’s motions. While seemingly mysterious and daunting with their overwhelmingly monochrome palette, Sasportas’s artworks are addressed foremost to the viewer’s intuition. The “Vertical Swamp – Raw Material” series is a meditation on the marks that the surroundings leave on an individual and our response to the forces that, sometimes unconsciously, govern everyday life. “Vertical Swamp – Raw Material” runs at Eigen + Art in Berlin through December 19, 2015.
