Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara opens “Shallow Puddles,” his first solo exhibition at Blum & Poe’s Tokyo outpost on October 2, presenting a series of 12 paintings from 2004 and 2006.Created using small square pieces of canvas affixed to wall-mounted circular dishes, these paintings usher the viewer into a seemingly waterlogged world — the “shallow puddles” of the exhibition title. Mirroring the format of the works are the expressions worn by the solitary figures depicted in them, which capture and hold the viewer’s gaze with their fulsome, limpid gaze.Although selected pieces from this series have previously been shown at Osaka’s graf media gm (2004) and Aomori’s Yoshii Brick Brewhouse (2006), this is the first display of “Shallow Puddles” in Tokyo.Yoshitomo Nara’s “Shallow Puddles” runs October 2 through November 14, 2015 at Blum & Poe Tokyo.Follow @ARTINFOJapan
