While most Singaporean galleries are awash with references to the nation’s 50th anniversary this month, Element Art Space will feature the work of a renowned Chinese artist, Ming Jing. The awarded winning Chinese artist has forged his own path in the art world with his light-filled abstract oil paintings. Traditionally in China abstract painting is little praised and featured, thus slowing the growth of the category. Ming Jing however has made a name for himself, winning The China Oil Painting Institute award in 1997 and 2001, as well as exhibiting his work internationally. His paintings often juxtapose light, almost transparent backgrounds with subjects accented with darker shades, creating depth in his paintings. His work depicts everyday scenes with hints of desire, such as a man appreciating flowers or an artist painting a still life, though reimagined through an abstract lens. His liberated gestures and brush lines are casual but still produce works of fine detail. This liberation also speaks to his conscious ideas and plans for his paintings, but also his subconscious that contributes to the ultimate execution of work.“Desires Mystified: Oil Paintings by Ming Jing” is on view August 14-September 6 at Element Art Space.
