Boo Sze Yang Paints Mourning of Lee Kuan Yew

The recent passing of Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew brought the nation to a halt as its people collectively mourned the death of its first  prime minister. Singapore’s busy streets came to a standstill  for the funeral procession as thousands braved the rain to catch a glimpse of the casket during a state funeral processionThe momentous day is the subject of Singaporean artist Boo Sze Yang’s latest series of paintings that capture the somber tone of the event and the national mourning.Titled “29.03.15,” the oil painting series depict individuals and groups of mourners grappling with a profound sense of loss.Boo focuses on the reaction of anonymous Singaporeans in order to offer a closer view o the effect of the loss of politician. Without any explicit reference to Lee, the works capture to strong impact of his passing and the unified reaction of sadness experienced by the nation.Known for painting topics of unusual subject matter, Boo aims to present metaphors for the human condition through everyday scenes and settings.“29.03.15” is no exception as everyday Singaporeans are the subject of his work painted with deft brushstrokes and images drawn from photographs and memory.The exhibition's opening was timed around Singapore’s National Day on Aug 9 as the country celebrates its 50th anniversary year.“29.03.15” by Boo Sze Yang is on view at iPreciation from July 31-August 22.
