Three vastly different artists have taken over the white cube space of Galerie Houg in Paris this summer.Works by Aurélie Pétrel, Jérôme Allavena, and Marjolijn de Witwill examine the crossover of their seemingly dissimilar practices for this "Summer Show" that aims to allow the viewer to construct meaning from what is left unsaid.Allavena’s large canvases and black and white drawings feature prominently in the space. It is with his line drawings that he creates simple, everyday stories, from a man hit by a truck to a woman coming out of her car to go shopping. The series titled “Knot” ties these narratives together as the viewer imagines what is not pictured — the scenery. Allavena does not piece together these narratives in a common way, instead he uses what is not explicitly shown in the works to allow the view to construct the scene.Pétrel’s work focuses on the photographic idea of partition or the redistribution and notation of an object. Her works appear to be in an “embryonic phase,” or still developing in achieving its potential. She considers the act of redistribution key to her images and part of their process of maturing. Photographs can be shared, and shared again, each time realizing a new meaning. In de Wit’s pieces, the clash between mankind and nature is at the center of her work, or rather, mankind having their way with nature. Seen through her work is the struggle between urban planning and the natural world. In her pieces remnants of the drawing table obscure scenes of idyllic nature.“Summer Show” is on view at Galerie Houg through September 27 with a break from August 8-15.
