In line with the aquatic vibes of summer, Plus One Gallery has put together a group show dedicated to the art of the splash. In popular culture the image of the splash has served as the backdrop of iconic narratives, be it a story of personal relations or summertime excess. Now, with a group of works by Toby Boothman, Matt Story, Paul Cadden, Gustavo Fernandes, and Mike Francis, the splash is being commemorated in a new way, one through intricate painting techniques and hyperrealism.“Splash” includes the work of Toby Boothman’s “White Hot,” which depicts a woman wringing her hair following a swim. Boothman uses a modern version of a Renaissance painting technique called “Technique Mixed” that helps him achieve glowing translucency and a white and raw amber color.Matt Story also uses a classical method of painting, used for centuries by Titan and Caravaggio. The result is one of hyperreal forms that capture motion, such as the featured painting “Red Arch Bubble Up.”Paul Cadden’s contribution to the show uses pencil drawings on recycled cartridge paper as his canvas to convey emotional, social, and political thematic elements. Gustave Fernandes conversely uses color boldly in his depictions of individuals on a boat and diving into the ocean.A highlight of the show is Mike Francis’ paintings that blur the line between reality and the imagined using dissimilar backgrounds and situations. Instead of creating hyperreal colors and positioning of objects, he creates a world that adheres to its own rules and obligations.“Splash” is on view at Plus One Gallery through August 22.
