Cahiers d’Art’s solo exhibition of internationally renowned polish artist Monika Sosnowska focuses on a series of architecture-inspired paper models as well as a selection of maquettes produced by the artist during a three-month residency at the Atelier Calder in Saché.Sosnowska is best known creating large-scale, site specific, psychologically charged sculptural installations for which she draws inspiration from the architectural details and structures that define and characterise the built environment of her native Warsaw and its Communist past.With her paper models, Sosnowska has distorted and detached found architectural elements from their common utility, endowing them with an “autonomous sculptural identity” that challenges the viewer’s awareness of form and space and suggests a new way of looking at objects.According to the Cahiers d’Art, “through her distorted sculptures, she highlights the remains of once glorified ideologies of totalitarian regimes, forcing us to reflect upon our relationship to history and to space.”Revisiting the theme of the “maquette,” an interest that began in 2005 with her exhibition at the Foskal Gallery in Warsaw, the artist’s Atelier Calder residency models were created with the intention of later enlarging them into the full-size sculptures for which she is best known, just as Calder himself produced models on which to base his own monumental sculptures.Sosnowska also created a special edition for Cahiers d’Art comprising a series of lamps based on Portuguese designs from the 1970s. Recalling an old-fashioned method of painting advertisements on shop windows, the roughly painted lamps appear flawlessly white when switched off, but when switched on reveal the imperfections of the painted surface, creating a dramatic effect.“Monika Sosnowska” is at Cahiers d’Art in Paris until September 30, 2015
