Saturday, June 27 marks the launch of American artist and filmmaker Doug Aitken’s “Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening” at the Barbican Centre in London. Billed as a “living exhibition” that encourages “cross-disciplinary collaboration among artists from different backgrounds,” Aitken’s month-long project features more than 50 performances, 20 residencies, rehearsals, workshops, and talks involving more than 100 international and UK-based artists from the worlds of contemporary art, music, dance, graphic design, and film.Doug Aitken said: “Station to Station is a platform for progressive culture and new artistic experimentation. It will be amazing to see Station to Station come to life in London in such a unique, multi-arts environment as the Barbican. This is a living exhibition with artists of all mediums, creating unique works and unpredictable encounters every day.”In London, “Station to Station” will take over the Barbican Centre’s indoor and outdoor spaces, each day offering a new set of experiences and interventions such as an 88-cymbal-players performance in the Concert Hall led by the Boredoms, a specially commissioned interactive laser installation by Aaron Koblin and Ben Tricklebank, and a meal comprising 100 cactus omelettes prepared for diners to Ed Ruscha’s special recipe, and immersive yurts designed by Kenneth Anger, Urs Fischer, Liz Glynn.“Station to Station” at the Barbican is the latest iteration and the only international leg of Aitken’s “Station to Station” project which first crossed North America by train from the Atlantic to the Pacific over 23 days in 2013, making nine stops in major cities and off-the-grid locations where a constantly changing group of creative contributors staged site-specific happenings, in the process creating a platform for creativity and cross-collaboration.Click the slideshow to see highlights of “Station to Station” at the BarbicanView the full program here.Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening from Barbican Centre on Vimeo.
