Esther Schipper: Christoph Keller, Grey MagicGerman artist Christoph Keller studied mathematics, physics, and hydrology, as well as liberal arts and film, all of which inform his artistic practice and interest in fringe science and parapsychological notions. Keller is also deeply fascinated with the effects of ether, both as a drug and as a concept, which he has made the theme of an ongoing project previously featured in exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Schering Stiftung Berlin.“Grey Magic,” his new exhibition at Esther Schipper, is part of this “Aether” series and inspired by Salomo Friedlaender/Mynona’s 1922 Berlin novel “Grey Magic,” which in return makes reference to a theory propagated by philosopher Ernst Marcus concerning ‘eccentric sensation’ that locates human perception outside the body, eradicating the difference between the external object and our perception of it. At Esther Schipper, Keller presents sculptural works and prints dedicated to this notion and the discourse around it fostered by the Berlin Bohème in the 1920s. The show also includes a setting for an interactive psychological experiment about telepathical image transference which visitors are invited to participate in. Opening: June 27, 6-9 pm. On view through September 5, 2015.Johnen Galerie: Summer Group ShowJust in time for the “tropical heat wave” predicted for Berlin in July, Johnen Galerie is opening its summer group show “Sommerkino” (“Cinema Summer”), a cinema-style exhibition with a film program plus accompanying exhibition featuring films and/or works by David Claerbout, Martin Creed, Ceal Floyer, Ryan Gander, Liam Gillick, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Dan Graham, Rodney Graham, Pierre Huyghe, Candida Höfer, Christoph Keller, Roman Ondák, Christopher Roth, Anri Sala, Karin Sander, and Wilhelm Sasnal.Opening: June 27, 6-9 pm. The exhibition titled “The Admirable Number Pi” is dedicated to the implications of infinity represented in the Greek numeral. To quote the poetic exhibition preview: “‘The Admirable Number Pi’ is a duel with numbers, words, and pictures, where nature comes out on top. The tears mathematicians have shed for the ‘imperfect perfection’ of numbers are dried by the sighs of artists delighting in the precision of words and errors.” With works by Stanisław Dróżdż, Jan Dibbets, KwieKulik, Mario Merz, Ryszard Wasko as well as Vlatka Horvat, Marlena Kudlicka, and Szymon Kobylarz.Opening: June 26, 6-9 pm: On view through September 19, 2015.Akademie der Künste: Miss Read.
