New Editions by Julian Opie at Alan Cristea Gallery, London

“Julian Opie: 2012 – 2015” at London’s Alan Cristea Gallery presents new works by the renowned British artist alongside some of his most exciting prints and animations from the last three years. Showing across the gallery’s two spaces at 31 and 34 Cork Street, the exhibition features Opie’s recent editions that have been inspired by different views of the town and countryside.Highlights of the exhibition include “Walking in the rain.” (2015), a new pair of screenprints depicting figures in London and Seoul; a new series of lenticulars, “Nature 2.” (2015), which depict forest trees, boats, sheep, and fish in shallow rock pools; and for the first time a new series of aluminium wall hangings, “Nature 1.” (2015), featuring images of boats, sheep, carp, and pebbles.According to Alan Cristea, owner and managing director of Alan Cristea Gallery, Opie has achieved his status as an artist of contemporary life “through reminding us to look at what is around us, by highlighting the essential qualities of what we are looking at... He has taught me how to look and, in doing so, has reminded me of the mundane miracle of life.”Opie explains: “Everything you see is a trick of the light. Light bouncing into your eye, light casting shadows, creating depth, shapes, colors. Remove the light and it’s all gone. We use vision as a means of survival and it’s essential to take it for granted in order to function, but awareness allows us to look at looking and by extension look at ourselves and be aware of our presence.”“Julian Opie: 2012 – 2015” is at Alan Cristea Gallery from June 5 to July 18.
