It has been thirty years since Henry Moore and Helaine Blumenfeld’s influential joint exhibition “A British Dialogue: From Perry Green to Cambridge.” Blumenfeld has deservedly been called “the heir to Moore” and her works hailed as “the Moores of the future.”Opening on May 22, a new exhibition at Bowman Sculpture, titled “Helaine Blumenfeld / Henry Moore: A Dialogue 1985-2015,” will show previously unexhibited works by both artists from private collections, as well as revisit works from the original 1985 show and new works by Blumenfeld.A new work by Blumenfeld will also be erected in London’s Berkeley Square, coinciding with the event. The joint exhibition will once again create an occasion in which to study the intersecting and differing practices of the two sculptors. While both remain based in the human body, Moore’s pieces are linked to weight and power, while Blumenfeld’s delicate forms, often resembling shells or petals, are about weightlessness and fragility. Simply, Moore is more “masculine” and Blumenfeld is more “feminine,” an engrossing subject when viewed in unison.Art critic and lecturer, Alan Caine, stated: “Moore and Blumenfeld are two sculptors who share an interest in elemental images usually based on the human body. They also share a level of abstraction which does not dwell on narratives, personalities and direct portraits but searches for a spiritual dimension which is monumental — and in many ways transcendent.”The exhibition examines the legacy of Moore as one of the most important British artists and his influence on Blumenfeld, one of Britain’s leading contemporary sculptors. The joint show “Helaine Blumenfeld / Henry Moore: A Dialogue 1985-2015” will run from May 22-June 30 at Bowman Sculpture.
