China’s Post-Ink Painting Era at Galerie Nathalie Obadia

“Revolution in Tradition: China’s post-ink painting era” at Galerie Nathalie Obadia in Paris is a pioneering exhibition aimed at showcasing the exciting developments in Chinese art and its connection to the long tradition of ink painting.Chinese ink painting has undergone a revival in recent years that has resulted in the development of a number of museum shows and encouraged a host of young Chinese artists to explore and reinterpret the traditions of Chinese ink painting.Curated by independent ink painting scholar Tiffany Wai-Ying Beres, “Revolution in Tradition: China’s post-ink painting era” focuses on a group of artists who have been particularly active in developing, innovating, and subverting the legacy of traditional Chinese ink art.Featuring works by Shang Yang  (b. 1942), Gu Wenda (b.1955), Qiu Zhijie (b. 1969), Hao Shiming (b. 1977), and Ni Youyu (b. 1984), the exhibition juxtaposes the work of celebrated contemporary masters with emerging talent.According to Ms. Beres, each of the artists in the exhibition has left a distinctive mark in the evolution of Chinese ink art by incorporating aesthetic and philosophical sensibilities of Chinese artistic traditions into a new and more international discourse.“Revolution in Tradition: China's post-ink painting era” is Galerie Nathalie Obadia’s Paris galleries in Cloître Saint-Merri and Bourg-Tibourg until May 31, 2015.
