A multidisciplinary exhibition of work by renowned Portuguese street artist Alexandre Farto aka Vhils has opened at Lazarides Rathbone, marking the artist’s final gallery exhibition for the foreseeable future. The artist’s long awaited return to the UK follows his last major collection presented at Lazarides Rathbone in 2012.Comprised of ambitious large-scale figurative compositions in wood, metal, polystyrene, billboard, and video, “Dissonance” reflects on the rapid the rapidly evolving urban landscape, exploring what the gallery describes as “notions of increased saturation and dilution of personal identities in contemporary urban societies.”Farto’s new series of dynamic work expands on themes developed throughout his widely acclaimed 2014 solo exhibitions: “Dissection” at Lisbon's EDP Museum and “Vestiges” in Paris. And although he is not scheduling any major commercial shows, he will be working on a number of off-site ventures and international museum projects.Lazarides founder Steve Lazarides said: “I first saw Alex’s work back in 2007 and was totally floored. Here was this crazy Portuguese kid, doing these mad portraits on the street by chopping out bits of walls. It was one of the most innovative techniques I’d ever seen. It has been a pleasure to see how much he has come on from those early days to his most recent museum show in Lisbon. Long may it continue.”Alexandre Farto / Vhils: Dissonance is at Lazarides Rathbone until April 23, 2015Alexandre Farto aka Vhils | Dissonance | Lazarides Rathbone from Lazarides on Vimeo.
