Lisson Gallery in London has opened concurrent solo exhibitions by two of the world’s most influential and respected contemporary artists: Anish Kapoor and Lee Ufan. Both exhibitions feature new bodies of work that showcase each artist’s singular vision and refined practice. The Anish Kapoor exhibition at Lisson’s 52-54 Bell Street gallery marks the artist’s radical return to painting. The sculptural surfaces of Kapoor‘s red and white resin and silicon paintings recall his recent wax-based mechanised installations such as “My Red Homeland” (2003).According to the Gallery, “the contested surface of the new silicon works extends Kapoor’s interest in the legend of Marsyas, whose skin was flayed by the Greek god Apollo and whose name was used as title for the artist’s 2002 Turbine Hall commission at Tate Modern.”Complementing the new paintings are two floor-based sculptures in pink onyx as well as two wall-mounted sculptures with convex mirrored surfaces that “bend the reflected spaces and viewers back on themselves.”A short distance away at Lisson’s 27 Bell Street gallery space is a new body of work by Lee Ufan which includes the artist’s most recent series of “Dialogue” paintings and watercolours as well as two major sculptural works.Ufan’s new “Dialogue” series embodies the artist’s belief in utilising an economy of gesture or representation in search of the maximum possible effect or resonance. Each work features a single sweep of paint composed of accretions of smaller strokes built up over time. For the first of the two sculptural works, Ufan has placed a large rock in front of a blank virgin canvas. The second, which is situated outside in the interior courtyard and is surrounded by a sea of white marble chips, features another large stone placed onto a sheet of glass and manmade steel plates.“Lee Ufan” is at Lisson’s 27 Bell Street London space and “Anish Kapoor” is at the Gallery’s 52 - 54 Bell Street London space. Both exhibitions are on until May 9.
