The exhibition “Coal Seam redux” by Miles Coolidge at Peter Blum Gallery in New York will end on February 4, 2017. This is your last opportunity to check out the works of this Canadian artist at the gallery. The exhibition includes two recent bodies of photographic works by Miles Coolidge reflecting the impact of scientific and industrial processes into the realm of art. The main gallery space displays five large-scale black-and-white photographs of the active working surface of a coal mine in the Ruhr Valley, Germany, shot in 2013 with an 8 x 10 camera using long exposures that capture the terrain in the darkness of the mine shaft, while the second group of work consists of a group of color images that are inspired by the paper chromatographic experiments of the mid-19th century German scientist, F.F. Runge, recalling tantric drawings, halos, and eyes. The exhibition addresses scientific, social and artistic history with a rich visual vocabulary, with the use of coal as a subject and as the material, underscoring the artist’s nuanced investigation. The exhibition is on view at Peter Blum Gallery, 20 West 57th Street, New York, NY 10019, USA.For details, visit: http://peterblumgallery.com/Click on the slideshow for a sneak peek of the exhibition.
