In today’s hyperactive art world, where instant gratification reigns supreme, Thai artist Pinaree Sanpitak stands out from the crowd. The elegance and grace of her diverse and intelligent practice is an antidote to the chaos of the contemporary world, evoking contemplation and encouraging introspection. “Collection+ Pinaree Sanpitak” at the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF) in Sydney is Sanpitak’s first solo exhibition in Australia.Sanpitak is best known for creating works that feature the shape of the female breast in one form or another, which has led to her becoming known as the “breast artist.” Her practice began as an attempt to understand herself as a woman, but she now works across genders, engaging with the body as a site of contemplation and understanding. Another key element of her practice is her use of materials, which include painting, drawing, textiles, sculpture, and performance. The basis of SCAF’s Collection+ series is the 800-strong Gene & Brian Sherman Collection. For each Collection+ exhibition a curator is invited to select a single artist from the collection and research national and international collections to identify complementary or contrasting work by the same artist. Jasmine Stephens, the curator of “Collection+ Pinaree Sanpitak,” chose Sanpitak’s “The Mirror” 2009 as the basis of the exhibition.“Collection+ Pinaree Sanpitak,” Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, Sydney, until December 13.
