“The Stars Were Aligned for a Century of New Beginnings,” an exhibition featuring the works of Egyptian artist Basim Magdy (b. 1977) will run from April 13, through June 18, 2017, at the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in the UK. The selection of works on display focuses on the artist’s film work. Taking into account the past, present, and future, the social blueprints, and ideologies, Magdy’s work reflects dreams, scientific theory and washed up utopian ambitions. His works on paper and in film, photography and slide projection explore the present social and political climate and our collective failure where we repeat the same mistakes in a recurring cycle. The exhibition comprises a trilogy of Magdy’s films produced in 2014, Hatching Monkeys, The Many Colors of the Sky Radiate Forgetfulness and The Dent, present surreal alternative realities. Also part of the exhibit are a series of neon bright works on paper with spray paint, collaged elements, gouache, acrylics, and watercolors depict scenes of a probable apocalyptic future where machines are dominant over man.The exhibition is on view at Arnolfini Gallery, 16 Narrow Quay, Bristol BS1 4QA, UK.
