New York University’s fine art museum, Grey Art Gallery will be hosting an exhibition “Inventing Downtown: Artist- Run Galleries in New York City, 1952- 1965” that will be on view from January 10 through April 1, 2017.Amidst the era of perennial popularity of Abstract Expressionism and the rise of Pop art in the mid-20th century, the New York art scene experienced a new development of artist-run galleries, which resulted from the efforts by a gamut of artists to create dedicated spaces for innovative works of art. The exhibition presents works from such 14 galleries that acted as these artist-run platforms of experimentations ranging from abstract and figurative painting, assemblage, sculpture, and works on paper to vital installations and performances. Presented via five thematic groupings - ‘Leaving Midtown,’ featuring galleries which ventured through the co-op model of business structure where the expenses were shared among the members; ‘City as Muse,’ which showcases galleries which achieved accolades for their dynamic installations and groundbreaking performances; ‘Space and Time’ that focuses on galleries from different conceptual areas; ‘Politics as Practice,’ which examines the practice of politics and its viability on the subject of art; and ‘Defining Downtown,’ which focuses on the Green Gallery, as it played a vital role in nurturing the ascent of Pop art and Minimalism - the exhibition addresses issues that still reverbs through in contemporary art world, almost half a century later since the era of emergence of artist-run galleries. The exhibition will be on view at Grey Art Gallery NYU, 100 Washington Square East, New York, NY 10003, USA.
