Opening October 30 at Cheim & Read, “Louise Bourgeois: Suspension” places a particular focus on the work of the late French-American sculptor — namely, as the title suggests, her works that feature hanging pieces. In addition to the group of sculptures — which span 45 years of her practice, ranging in style from metals to fabrics, abstract shapes to dangling body parts — visitors can view a collection of the artist’s early drawings from the 1940s that resemble her later, pendulous works. As with much of Bourgeois’s oeuvre, these pieces are inspired by early memories: Describing her father’s collection of wooden chairs, which he would hang from the rafters of her attic, Bourgeois said, “It was very pure.... You would look up and see these armchairs hanging in very good order. The floor was bare.... This is the origin of a lot of hanging pieces.” “Louise Bourgeois: Suspension” is on view at Cheim & Read through January 10, 2015.
