Susan Hobbs Gallery, Toronto, presents the exhibition by Patrick Howlett, titled 'The Personal Atmosphere', on view through January 28, 2017.Howlett presents new paintings that diagram phenomena like stardust, metamorphosis, electro-magnetic vibrations and various other cosmic coaching strategies, inspired in part from the 1908 book. He stumbled upon the old book - the Personal Atmosphere, by Frank Channing Haddock - at the Goodwill stored. Years later, feeling bad, he opened the book and used its power to make this show. It is a turn of the century ‘positive thinking’ mantra, a Power-for-Success series written with a storm of pseudoscientific proofs on electro-magnetic vibrations. Loosely connecting this early gem of power pop ‘psychology’ to modern roots of current individualism is an exploration of the two- part relationship of figure (positive space) and ground (negative space), a pictorial predicament that has echoes in relations outside the canvas as well.
