The City of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England, has announced that Cartwright Hall – Bradford’s civic art gallery – will celebrate David Hockney’s 80th birthday with the launch of a new permanent gallery honoring the legendary artist.Born in Bradford on July 9, 1937 into what he describes as a “radical working-class family,” Hockney went on to attended Bradford Grammar School before enrolling in the Bradford Regional College of Art in 1953 where he received a traditional training based on drawing from life. The David Hockney Gallery at Cartwright Hall will house a permanent display of the city’s unrivalled collection of Hockney’s early work and will showcase paintings, sketches, ipad drawings, prints, and photographs from throughout his career.Drawings and sketches from Hockney’s days as a student in the city, including many that have rarely been seen in public and never all together, will be exhibited alongside some of the artist’s more well-known works such as the iconic pool scene “Le Plongeur.”Jill Iredale, curator at Cartwright Hall, commented: “This new gallery will be a place where people will be able to see what inspired Hockney while he was here in the city and engage directly with some of his work from then through to now.“I hope that all ages will be inspired by the story we will tell of how a boy from Bradford was always destined to make his mark on the cultural landscape of not just this country but across the globe for more than six decades.”
