Michael Simpson's 'Flat Surface Painting' is on view at the David Risley Gallery, London. The selection of works on display features large scale paintings that rework a variety of elements. The influence of the fifteenth century Venetian and early Flemish painting can be observed in Simpson’s work and is represented by the formal restraint and reduced palette of Minimalism. The artist’s paintings are a juggle between abstraction and representation, between depth and flatness. His key motifs can be observed through essential geometry and situated in similarly pared-down environment. Simpson’s distinct style can be characterized as darkly comedic and that which creates subject matter to question the nature of painting itself. The exhibition is on view at David Risley Gallery, Bispevej 29, 2400 København NV, Denmark.
