Angela Bulloch, recognized as one of the Young British Artists, is bringing her latest sculptural creations to Simon Lee Hong Kong. “One Way Conversation” opens on October 14, and will run through November 19.Bulloch’s new geometric stacked columns are an extension of her recent body of work, previously exhibited at the Sharjah Art Museum in the exhibition “Considering Dynamics and The Forms Of Chaos,” and during “L'ALMANAC 16” at Le Consortium Dijon in France.Made of steel and MDF (medium-density fibreboard), these minimalistic creations have been designed using a digital imaging program owing to the artist’s interest in aesthetics and technology. These colorful columns also look into her ongoing investigation of cybernetics – the scientific study of how our society processes and interprets information. The sculptures’ totem-like appearance and idiosyncratic geometric rhomboid shape allude to how human beings attribute significance to various objects, and explore “the relationship between form, color, repetition, and the expressive possibilities of object and space.”Set against a backdrop of large wall paintings depicting polyhedric forms, the columns will appear to come to life as the viewer navigates around the works and the flat planes. The layout will create an optical illusion, shifting between two and three dimensions. This is Angela Bulloch’s second solo exhibition with Simon Lee in Hong Kong, where she previously presented her scintillating "Night Sky" series coinciding with Art Basel Hong Kong in May 2013. Her "Night Sky" simulations comprise one of her most distinctive bodies of work, in addition to her fluorescent-lit “Pixel Boxes” installations and “Drawing Machine,” all of which illustrate her interest in systems, patterns, and rules.“One Way Conversation” will run from October 14 through November 19 at Simon Lee Gallery, Hong Kong.
