Shows featuring early notebooks by Zaha Hadid, contemporary culture by Grayson Perry, and an extensive John Latham retrospective were announced in a joint press conference by the Serpentine Gallery and Serpentine Sackler Gallery on September 28.This winter, following the closing of the Helen Marten and Marc Camille Chaimowicz exhibitions (which opened on September 29), the Serpentine Sackler will host the early paintings and drawings of architect Zaha Hadid, who was working on this exhibition when she passed away in spring 2016. Spanning from her training in architecture during her 20s to just before her first building opened in 1993, the exhibition will feature calligraphic drawings alongside selections from her never-before-seen private notebooks. The other Serpentine, meanwhile, will be displaying the first ever institutional exhibition of the work of Lucy Raven, a New York-based artist who will be producing a site-specific installation inspired by the evolution of Hollywood cinema. Both of these exhibitions will run from December 8, 2016 through February 12, 2017.Following these, both spaces will team up to show a retrospective of the work of John Latham, who has long been considered an “artists’ artist.” The exhibitions will show works from Latham’s extensive practice with examples of his revolutionary concept of “social sculpture,” including events at the artist’s home, which he has named a living sculpture. The retrospective opens in March 2017.Come June, Grayson Perry — who describes himself as a “transvestite potter” — will show his ceramics at the Serpentine in “The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever!” This will be his newest exhibition to take a satirical and astute look at contemporary issues and art, created in an ever-increasing range of media including tapestry, bronze, prints, and, of course, the pots that brought the artist his 2003 Turner Prize. Although the summer show at the Sackler is yet to be announced, the Serpentine Pavilion will return for another year. No decisions have yet been made as to who will be designing the pavilion, but they will be in illustrious company. Many of the world’s most famous and talented architects have designed the pavilion since the first one in 2000, which was conceptualized by the woman celebrated at the Serpentine in winter 2016, Zaha Hadid.“Zaha Hadid: Early Paintings and Drawings” and “Lucy Raven” run from December 8, 2016 through February 12, 2017. “John Latham” runs from March 2 through May 21, 2017. “Grayson Perry: The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever!” runs from June 8 through September 7, 2017.
