Tina Keng Gallery’s contemporary art platform TKG+ is presenting two simultaneous solo exhibitions showcasing two local contemporary artists, Chen Ching-Yuan and Charwei Tsai. The exhibitions examine the nature of human perception through a wide range of mediums, and are on view until November 20.“What am I? If I can’t be yours” introduces emerging artist Chen Ching-Yuan from Taipei. The exhibition displays his dream-like landscape oil paintings featuring fragmented narratives and symbols, which transform his work from “information” to “perception” through visual metaphors. The artist’s cryptic paintings stem from an interest in the unstable and fragile ideas created when facing tremendous, uncontrollable pressure.Chen scrutinizes Taiwanese politics and his own identity. The title of the exhibition refers to lyrics from the song “Thanatos: If I Can’t be Yours,” which was featured in the Japanese anime movie “Evangelion.” Throughout his paintings, Chen attempts to provide his own analysis of the lyrics while questioning the use of language not only as a form of communication, but also how we perceive our surroundings and ourselves through it. Charwei Tsai presents her latest work through photography, installation, and a video piece in “Universe of Possibilities.” The artworks showcased are a continuation of her investigation into the shifting relationship between humans and the natural world. Notably in the photography work “Universe of Possibilities,” she looks into the fleeting nature of human perception. Although the images deceptively depict planets at first glance, they are actually of materials discarded by commercial fishing boats along the coast of Central Vietnam. At the opening of the exhibition, Tsai also launched the new publication “Travellers and Magicians” — the 10th issue of the biannual curatorial journal “Lovely Daze,” which encompasses interviews, writings, and artwork by leading artists such as Harold Ancart, Lee Kit, David Lynch, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. This journal will also be included in “The Editorial” event of the Taipei Biennale at Taipei Fine Arts Museum on December 10-11. “What am I? If I can’t be yours” and “Universe of Possibilities” run through November 20 at TKG+, Taipei.
