An exhibition featuring the work of South African photographer David Goldblatt will be on display through October 29, 2016, at Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York. This is the first US show of Goldblatt’s photographs from two series, “The Transported of KwaNdebele: A South African Odyssey,” 1983–1984, and “Ex-Offenders at the Scene of Crime,” 2008–2015.The exhibition examines Goldblatt’s documentation of political and social developments in South Africa over a span of 60 years. His photographs are a critical representation of the South African people and their lives with a compassionate eye.Goldblatt’s photographic essay on homeland transport, “The Transported of KwaNdebele,” looks at the oppressive geographical displacement imposed by apartheid. The photographs depict the workers of KwaNdebele who spend almost 31⁄2 and 8 hours each day traveling to and from the city of Pretoria and how apartheid policy forced them to live in settlements far away from the city. In his series “Ex-Offenders at the Scene of Crime,” Goldblatt looks at the humanity of rehabilitated criminals or ex-offenders on parole who return to their sight of crime that changed their lives. The photographs are accompanied by personal narratives.David Goldblatt’s photographs reflect the complexities of everyday life to unravel effects of apartheid and post-apartheid conditions that continues to impact the South Africa’s social fabric to this day.The exhibition is on view at Pace/MacGill Gallery, 32 East 57th Street, 9th floor, New York 10022.
